Rick's FAQ
Q. Where should I install a DVR?
A. Location depends on your
accessibility and on how public or private the system is
going to be. If you are the only one who should have access
to the system, then it should be in some type of climate
controlled locked area or cabinet.
Q. Can the cameras that are installed inside of the
heated camera housing plug into that power source without
having to run a separate power source for the camera?
A. As long as the power supply for
that unit has the amperage rating to handle the heater, fan
and camera.
Q. How many days of recording can I expect the DVR to
store?
A. That depends
on several factors: hard drive size, number of cameras,
quality of recording, and frames per second (IPS-images per
second). The higher the settings, the less time you will be
able to record.
Q. What kind of cabling do I need to run from a
surveillance camera to the DVR?
A. For most applications you will use
RG-59 coaxial cable and 18-2 for power to the camera.
Q. What are the miscellaneous precautions when installing
your system?
A. Read the manual that comes with
your equipment. Prior to installation set up the equipment
on a bench and familiarize yourself with it. Keep your
equipment dry and dust free. Pre-plan your camera shots and
have some idea as to what you want to see. Be aware of power
outlet arrangements or have new outlets installed prior to
installation. Check for sufficient lighting in your camera
areas by having more lights installed or improved lighting
prior to installation.
Q. What happens in the event of a power outage?
A. All systems shutdown unless you
have an emergency generator. If it is a very brief outage
and you have a UPS battery back up, in most cases, you will
have a loss of recorded images during the power outage.
Q. Can I use my existing cameras?
A. As long as the
connections are compatible with your new equipment, usually
RG-59 coax with BNC connectors. This is not the case with
off the shelf all-in-one kits that can be purchased through
retail outlets.
Q. Do I need any special power
requirements for the DVR?
A. In the USA, normal household
current is 110/120 VAC 60 cycle. You should also have a UPS
battery back up or, at the least, a quality rated surge
strip.
Q. What are the backup devices supported by the system?
A. Depending on the DVR that you have,
it may have a removable hard drive, CF (compact flash) card,
CD burner, USB ports, and networking. Backup can be done
with each of these and should be covered in the user manual
or you can contact technical support to aide in this.
Q. My new LCD monitor is not displaying a picture; it
says “check cable”?
A. Locate the select
button on the front of the monitor and depress it. There
should be three settings: video, analog and digital.
Selecting the correct one should provide the video. |
